The cornerstone of Erda Energy’s heating and cooling solutions is its patented coaxial inclined borehole technology. Kevin Stickney, managing director of Erda Energy, explains that the company’s solutions extract heat energy from the earth and transfers it to the interior spaces of a building to raise its temperature. On the other hand, by reversing the process, excess heat is removed from the building and transmitted back to the earth, thus, offering a cooling effect inside the building. The result is a closed-loop system that provides heating, cooling, and storage of energy on a more efficient basis than traditional technologies.
Moreover, Erda Energy’s solutions reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower utility bills. As the bulk of the infrastructure is below ground—which lowers the risk of damage—the solution requires less maintenance and less space. “Compared to traditional heating systems, Erda Energy offers 25 percent cost savings through optimised energy conservation and reduced carbon emissions,” states Stickney.

With such modern carbon-saving solutions in play, Erda Energy is making great strides to replace old heating and cooling systems. Stickney mentions how Erda Energy was given the task of replacing a client’s fuel-based heating systems. While this project was underway, the client had also added more structural extensions to their buildings and made upgrades to their lighting system. With Erda Energy’s solutions, the client was able to reduce their energy consumption year after year, and at the same time, demonstrate 75 percent lower carbon emissions. Despite the fact that the client’s buildings were 33 percent larger than when the project initially began, Erda Energy’s solution was able to bring about a higher amount of energy efficiency.
Today, Erda Energy’s solutions are already deployed in retail stores, universities, and entire communities in the UK to cut annual HVAC energy usage. The company has recently expanded to the US and is considering its maiden projects in a region like California or the Northeast, where the demand for low carbon heating alternatives is snowballing and they can displace the use of water-intensive evaporative cooling. Moreover, Erda Energy has designed and implemented geo-exchange energy systems that utilise electricity based on grid availability, which creates value for both the host and the grid operator. The system dynamically modulates electrical load based on signals from the grid operator. With smart and innovative strategies, Erda Energy aims to offer customised energy solutions that allow buildings to reliably save money and energy while also paving the way for a sustainable future.
